Dr. John Stilwell is known for his work in the area of dispute resolution, negotiation, mediation and arbitration and teaches conflict resolution courses in the Texas Alternative Dispute Resolution program. He has practiced law in New York and Texas and, later, served in adjunct teaching roles at UT Dallas. Dr. Stilwell founded Common Knowledge Journal, and continues to serve as a contributing editor. He previously served as chairman of Workforce Dallas and has won several awards for his pro bono work. Dr. Stilwell earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of North Carolina, his J.D. from Columbia University Law School, and his PhD from UT Dallas.
Primary interest is teaching Alternative Dispute Resolution, with emphasis on mediation and the new Texas requirements for Collaborative procedures in family disputes including divorce and suits involving the interests of minor children. Students are given instruction in the history, theory and practice of mediation, including extensive role play.
