Dr. Steven Small became dean of the School of Behavioral and Brain Sciences in April 2019. Dr. Small’s research involves direct investigation of human subjects, particularly in speech and language, and more recently clinical and fundamental neurobiological aspects of sports-related head impacts and mild traumatic brain injuries (concussions). He is the founder of the Society for the Neurobiology of Language and a fellow of the American Academy of Neurology (AAN), the American Neurological Association (ANA), and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). Dr. Small served as chair of the department of neurology at the University of California, Irvine for seven years, and as Founder and Director of the Medical Innovation Institute for two years. Prior to that, he spent 11 years as a professor of neurology and psychology at the University of Chicago.
