Dr. Tres Thompson is a leading researcher in the area of the neurobiology of aging and memory. His recent research focused on sexual dichotomies of impairments caused by high-fat diets on spatial memory, hippocampal excitability, hormone release, glucose regulation, and molecular signaling pathways. He also has examined the detailed mechanisms of memory consolidation linking the hippocampus and the amygdala. Dr. Thompson, a neurophysiologist and behavioral pharmacologist, previously has studied stability versus plasticity of hippocampal place cells and the time course of mechanisms necessary for hippocampal-dependent memories. He is the founder of the neuroscience program in the School of Behavioral and Brain Sciences and has won numerous teaching awards at the school. He also has been an editorial board member for three neuroscience journals and serves on the Alzheimer’s Association Medical and Scientific Advisory Council. Dr. Thompson earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from California State University, San Bernardino, and his PhD from the University of Virginia, with postdoctoral training and faculty experience at Northwestern University Medical School.
