For Prospective Students
Eugene McDermott Graduate Fellow Program (UTD Internal Program)
Individuals who apply for doctoral study before January 15 will be considered for the Fellowship. Applications for the Graduate Fellow Program are through invitation only (through the Systems and Cellular Neuroscience program).
For Current Students
NSF Predoctoral Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP)
The NSF GRFP is for students within 2 years of starting their PhD. This can also include undergraduate students in their final year of studies. You can only apply for the GRFP once either during your first or second year of the PhD program. The application is pretty brief and must be “basic-science” focused. GRFP applications are for US citizens and permanent residents only. Deadline: Oct/Nov each year.
NIH NRSA F31 Predoctoral Fellowships
F31 NRSA applications are developed with your research PI and provide up to three years of research stipend funding. Upon successful receipt of the grant, we also seek additional funding for the fellow through the McDermott fellowship program. F31 applications are for US citizens and permanent residents only. Deadline: 3 times per year.
Department of Energy Computational Science Graduate Fellowship
Supports PhD research using high-performance computational or mathematical techniques in a variety of fields, including life science. You must be in your 1st year of the PhD program or just applying. Up to 4 years of full support. DOE CSGF applications are for US citizen and permanent residents only. Deadline: January.
National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate (NDSEG) Fellowships
The NDSEG fellowship from the U.S. Department of Defense annually supports graduate students in various fields including “Cognitive, Neural, and Behavioral Sciences”, and “Biosciences”. 3 years of full support. NDSEG is for US citizens only. Deadline: December.
Ford Foundation Predoctoral and Dissertation Fellowships
Application competition is administered by the National Research Council (NRC) of the National Academy of Sciences. Encompasses many fields, including life sciences and psychology. Awards are made on the basis of superior academic achievement, commitment to a career in teaching and research at the college or university level, promise of future achievement as scholars and teachers, and preparation to use diversity as a resource for enriching the education of all students. US citizens and permanent residents. Diversity is a major goal of this award. Deadline: December.
NIH NRSA F99/K00 Pre-doctoral to Post-doctoral Transition
The F99/K00 fellowship is a special fellowship that helps with the transition from pre-doctoral to post-doctoral research for highly motivated students. If you are a senior-level PhD student, talk to your faculty mentor about this opportunity. F99 applications are for US citizens and permanent residents only. The Diversity Specialized Predoctoral to Postdoctoral Advancement in Neuroscience (D-Span) program is a sub-program within this program. Deadline: 3 times per year.
